Transition Update – August 25

The Profile has been posted, and the search for our new rector is underway. As of today, one application has been received. As applications come in, they go through the following process as established by the Search Committee. Initially, the applications will be received by the Rev. Chris Craun in her role as the Transition Ministry Manager for the Diocese. She will verify that the applicant is in good standing with either the Episcopal Church or the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCA). She will then send the application to the Search Committee at St. Michael’s where it will be reviewed by all the committee members.

Reckoning with Racism Team News

St. Michael’s Reckoning with Racism team will be commissioned as an ongoing ministry on October 23, 2022. The team is planning a liturgy for that day, coupled with a forum in between the 9:00 and 11:00 am services.

Transition Updates – August 11 & 18

On Sunday, July 31, the St. Michael & All Angels Parish Profile was formally handed over to the Search Committee. One of the committee’s first duties will be to formulate the questions they will use to conduct interviews of the applicants. A subcommittee has been set up to do this.

A Note from the Interim Rector

What an amazing moment in our communal life this week has been. Last Sunday, about 160 folks from St Michael’s/San Miguel gathered for Eucharist and a picnic in Wilshire Park. It was like church on steroids: the service included a dramatization of the gospel of the day, Fr. Beto officiated at a wedding, and the Profile Committee handed off the Parish Profile to the Search Committee. That means that interested parties can now express an interest in being considered for Rector. Kudos to Barb and her Profile team!

A Note from the Transition Minister

The last few years have brought us big lessons – as a nation, a city, a parish and as individuals. One of the most intense lessons, as spiritual traditions the world over have taught us over and over again, is that all things can and will change no matter how we plan for the future. We have tricked ourselves into thinking that we can protect ourselves against the future. Some of us shore up our sense of certainty through storing up money and possessions. Some of us build walls around ourselves against those who disagree with us.

Upcoming Forums

Two important forums are coming up on August 7 and 14. A forum on the transition will be held at 11:30 am on Sunday, August 7, following the 10:00 am service. Led by Rev. Julia Nielsen, our Transition Minister, the purpose of the forum is to bring everyone up to date on where we are in the process of finding our new rector. On August 14, we celebrate recovery in both our service and at a forum following the service.
