From the Rector – Feast of the Ascension
Thursday is the Feast of the Ascension in the liturgical year. On this day the church remembers an important truth of our story: after death and after resurrection, life goes on–forever changed.

Thursday is the Feast of the Ascension in the liturgical year. On this day the church remembers an important truth of our story: after death and after resurrection, life goes on–forever changed.

This coming Sunday after the Ascension, we have a grand Anglican choral anthem with organ based on an excerpt from the Song of Solomon by English composer Patrick Hadley (1899-1973), including the text “Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.”

Broadway Night is back! Tickets will be on sale this Sunday and next (May 21 and 28) after both the 9:00 and 11:00 am services. Support the St. Michael’s Music Program in their annual fundraiser AND be thoroughly entertained in the process! This year, the dates are coming right up: Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3.

All are invited to a recital on Saturday, May 20, at 4:00 pm in the Nave. Choir Director Brian Fairbanks will be playing a recital of music for flute and organ by American composers. He will be joined by his good friend John Stuntebeck, the associate organist at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle. Brian will be playing “Bati l’gani,”by Meira Warshauer. It is inspired by another text from the “Song of Songs.”

There are several upcoming youth-group events, include a skate party on May 21 at St. Paul’s in Salem from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. Interested youth must register to receive lunch and skates; watch for an email from youth advisors about ride-sharing. Please contact Amy at St. Paul’s for more information or see the flyer in the Gallery.

I continue to be humbled by the generosity of St. Michael’s parishionersI In the past two months, you have contributed hugely to Sherman’s going-away purse, and you have responded with gifts surpassing our target for Rev. Painter’s moving costs. Truly amazing!

Cakes, pies and cookies, oh my! All are encouraged to attend the 2023 revival of the traditional St. Michael’s Cake Auction on Sunday, May 7, at 10:15 am in the Nativity Hall. The MOW/WOWs and Team L.I.F.E. are hosting the auction, featuring amazing and varied items from some of our best bakers.

A new day is dawning at St. Michael & All Angels. Last Sunday, we joyously celebrated the ministry of Rev. Sherman Hesselgrave. We will be forever grateful for his guidance and leadership through a difficult transition. He has earned some well-deserved rest and relaxation, and we wish Sherman safe travels in the coming weeks.
