Summer Music Update

In celebration of the 4th of July weekend, enjoy again this clip of St. Michael’s Music Director/Organist Hannah Brewer playing an arrangement of the classic patriotic tunes “O beautiful for spacious skies” and “America,” recorded last year. This coming Sunday, July 4, at the 9:00 am service, we’ll sing the moving Finlandia hymn This is my song for our national holiday, which calls for unity, peace and an appreciation for all nations: “My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean, and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine./ But other lands have sunlight too, and clover, and skies are ev’rywhere as blue as mine.”

Musings from the Associate Rector

One of the primary sources we have for understanding how monastics engaged the practice of contemplative reading of scripture in the first centuries of the Church’s life is called The Ladder of Monks, by a Carthusian named Guigo II. “The ladder” was the practice by which monks considered the text before them and examined it with study and questions and commentary, but then also began to leave their intellectual work behind for the spiritual work of contemplating what was beyond the power of their rational mind to understand.

Music for the Juneteenth Holiday

The prelude and postlude for Sunday, June 20, are offered in celebration of the Juneteenth holiday. The prelude, which you can hear a creative arrangement of here, is by Florence Price (1887-1953), the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer. She was a pianist, organist and teacher as well. Trained in the European tradition, her compositional style nevertheless reflects her Southern roots.

Sunday is the Day of Pentecost

This Sunday, May 23, we celebrate the moveable feast of Pentecost, which is celebrated on the 50th day (the seventh Sunday) from Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem, as described in Acts 2:1-31.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Update

Hey, kids! We are back – live and in-person for the 9 & 11 o’clock liturgies beginning on Pentecost, May 23. Bring your family to church and join Leslie Sackett for stories, crafts and games all summer long. Children’s Liturgy will meet in the Nativity or Parish Hall with windows open and lots of good air circulation.

Reckoning with Racism

Since September 2020, a cohort of St. Michael’s parishioners have been participating in a course called “Reckoning with Racism.” This was organized by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and has been a deep dive into the historical racism in the state of Oregon.
