The Day of Pentecost

(Illustrated Ministry)

The Day of Pentecost, also called WhitSunday, is this coming Sunday, June 5. Pentecost is celebrated on the 50th day (the seventh Sunday) from Easter Sunday and commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem. It is also considered the birthday of the church, and at St. Michael’s, we decorate the Nave with an abundance of paper doves and red, yellow and orange streamers (symbolizing joy and the fire of the Holy Spirit) and offer a special coffee hour after the 9:00 and 11:00 services.

We warmly welcome the Rt. Rev. Tom Breidenthal, who will preach at the 9:00 & 11:00 am services. The Rev. Sherman Hesselgrave will preside, and Rev. Julia Neilsen will assist. Bishop Breidenthal was the first assistant to Fr. John Scannell in the early ‘80s and went on to have an illustrious career, culminating in his position of Bishop of Southern Ohio from which he is now retired.

We will also celebrate the baptisms of James and Jazz at the 11:00 service, and we commission and thank the St. Michael’s Singers for their skill and hard work.
