The mission of St. Michael’s music ministry is to lead the congregation in worship that glorifies God and inspires the soul. Our choirs work diligently to prepare and offer the finest music possible in a variety of styles and expressions. We seek to grow musically, spiritually and in community in service to the church and the larger community.
St. Michael’s Singers
This 35-voice choir provides vocal leadership during the 9:00 and 11:00 am Sunday services from early September through early June. The choir sings an anthem during the offertory at each service and leads the congregation in the psalms, hymns and service music.
The St. Michael’s Singers is a close-knit community of singers with varying levels of choral experience who are willing to make the commitment required to maintain a high level of music-making in support of our worship services. The St. Michael’s Singers rehearse on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and sing at the 9:00 and/or 11:00 services each Sunday (except in summertime), rehearsing an hour before each service. A smaller Chamber Choir consisting of four paid section leaders and other members of the St. Michael’s Singers takes the alternate services.
The St. Michael’s Singers also prepares music for special services such as Choral Evensong, Advent Lessons & Carols, Christmas Eve and Holy Week. The choir’s repertoire ranges from traditional Anglican choral anthems to gospel spirituals, Renaissance motets, world music, and everything in between. The St. Michael’s Singers is open to anyone who can match pitch and commit to the schedule of weekly rehearsals and Sunday morning services. Some choral experience is helpful, but no audition is required. If you love to sing and are interested in learning more about or joining the St. Michael’s Singers, please contact Director of Music & Organist Hannah Brewer or Choir Director Brian Fairbanks.
Saints & Singers Choir
Formerly known as Takes the Fifth Choir and Band, this welcoming group sings about once a month, often on the first Sunday of the month at the 11:00 am service, with one Thursday night rehearsal before each service (except in the summer). Devoted to accessible, inclusive, diverse repertoire, particularly in the gospel and contemporary styles, the Saints & Singers welcome anyone wishing for a spirited, informal musical experience without the commitment of weekly rehearsals and frequent Sunday responsibilities. Interested singers should contact Choir Director Brian Fairbanks for more information.
The youth choir program at St. Michael’s is based on the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) tradition and is open to all treble voices between the ages of 8-18. This choir training program meets on Wednesdays at 4:45 pm during the school year to learn the basics of musicianship and choral technique. The Choristers sing a brief Evening Prayer service each Wednesday at 6:30 pm and join with the St. Michael’s Singers or the Saints & Singers Choir one Sunday per month at 9:00 or 11:00. Contact Hannah Brewer or Brian Fairbanks for more information.
Our Balcom and Vaughan pipe organ was orginally installed in 1973. Additions and improvements have been made by Bond Organ Builders. For the full organ specifications, click here.
St. Michael’s also has a set of Petit & Fritsen handbells, a two-manual Hubbard harpsichord, a Kawai grand piano in the sanctuary, and four other pianos throughout the building.
