Music for November 5

Enjoy the different flavors of our services this All Saints Sunday with our traditional Litany of the Saints and classic hymns like For all the saints and Ye holy angels bright at 9am. At the offertory the St. Michael’s Singers will present a sung version of The Beatitudes (from our gospel reading) by the living American composer Nancy Wertsch, as well as an excerpt by the English Renaissance composer William Byrd at communion. At 11am, the service will start with an introit and reading of names of our lost loved ones interspersed with the atmospheric toll of a handbell. The Choristers will join the Saints & Singers Choir in offering James E. Moore’s song Taste and See as the anthem.

Then, at 5pm we have our Choral Evensong for the Feast of All Souls. This contemplative, sung service of less than an hour will be preceded by a 15 minute harpsichord prelude (so be seated by 4:45pm to get the whole experience). Music will include Herbert Howells’ top-notch Collegium Regale evening canticles, a poignant excerpt from Canadian composer Eleanor Daley’s Requiem, and the favorite hymn Abide with me. Please join us after the Evensong for a reception in the Parish Hall graciously hosted by the 7:30am service members.
