Music for July 3

This Sunday at our 10 am service we celebrate the 4th of July weekend through our musical choices. We feature American music including two different arrangements of “Amazing Grace,” which first appeared as a hymn in the shape note tunebook Southern Harmony in 1847 (the hymn text, meanwhile, was written by the English abolitionist and clergyman John Newton in 1772).

We will also sing our now traditional and beloved hymn for this particular weekend, “This is my song,” set to the tune Finlandia. The beautiful second verse proclaims: “My country’s skies are bluer than the ocean, and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine. But other lands have sunlight too, and clover, and skies are everywhere as blue as mine. So hear my song, O God of all the nations, a song of peace for their land and for mine.”
