Music for January 22 and more

This Sunday for our season of Epiphany the choir will sing Randall Thompson’s Choose Something Like a Star, based on a poem by Robert Frost (printed in the bulletin). Most of our sacred choral repertoire is set to biblical or hymn-based texts. We depart from tradition this week by exploring this ambiguous, mysterious text, set so expressively by Thompson: “Say something to us we can learn/ By heart and when alone repeat.” We invite you to reflect and meditate on this anthem during the service. What does it mean to “choose something like a star?”

Plan on coming to Choral Evensong for the feast of Candlemas (also known as the Presentation or the Purification) on Wednesday, February 1st at 7 PM. The St. Michael’s Singers and Choristers are preparing works by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) and others. We will open with the Service of Light, starting in near darkness with candles for choir and congregation, as a symbol of Christ as the Light of the World.
