It must be a scary time for the Afghan refugees coming into our city at this time. They know little about us, and are in need of everything – housing, jobs, help with language, with riding the bus, with doctor appointments, with school, with housewares and warm clothing. Thankfully, there are agencies that have opened their hearts to them, helping them navigate through these difficult waters.
On Sunday, November 14, the Advocacy Action Committee will be in the courtyard, (or on the porch in front of the Nativity Hall if it rains), with letters asking our members of Congress to support the Keeping Girls in School Act (H.R. 4134/S.2276) . This bipartisan bill calls on our government to continue investments in quality and equitable education, and promotes girls’ empowerment and economic security around the world.
Since September 2020, on the last Saturday of each month, Burrito Love has been on a mission to provide a nutritional sack lunch to our community neighbors. As you walk in the neighborhood, you may notice Burrito Love flyers posted for the event on telephone poles. Included with each sack are cookies and a chilled bottle of water. The Super Torta restaurant on Woodstock provides the burritos at a significantly reduced cost.
The month of August is the perfect time to pick up a backpack and school supplies to help support local children in the foster-care system. Donations can be dropped off at the church on Sunday mornings inside the courtyard doors, or you can bring them during the week (call first). Monetary gifts are also very welcome to help “fill in the blanks” when more supplies are needed to complete the backpacks. Please bring your donations the next three Sundays—August 8, 15 & 22.
One of the stated goals of the St. Michael’s Immigrant Welcoming Congregation (IWC) is to accompany our immigrant brothers and sisters in their life journey. What we have learned in our 10+ years as a ministry at St. Michael’s is that accompaniment takes many forms.
On Sunday, June 13, the Advocacy Action Committee will have postcards to sign in support of two clean energy bills currently making their way through the State Legislature.
We have held three Land Story Gatherings and had great conversations. We are discovering that it is both overwhelming and inspiring to hear the Land Story of St. Michael’s – overwhelming with the recognition and acknowledgment of how we came to be on this land, and inspiring to envision a future world that seeks restitution and compassionate care.
Since September 2020, a cohort of St. Michael’s parishioners have been participating in a course called “Reckoning with Racism.” This was organized by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and has been a deep dive into the historical racism in the state of Oregon.
The Outreach & Justice team continues to guide St. Michael’s charitable giving. Click “read more” to see the thank-you notes from five of the organizations to whom we’ve contributed just in March and April, including Northwest Pilot Project (NWPP), Human Solutions, Portland Homeless Family Solutions (PHFS) and Health Care for All Oregon (HCAO).
