Music for Sunday, March 17

Sunday’s music delves into the classic Lenten theme of inward-looking poignancy. The choir will sing two anthems exploring the anticipation of life after death, William L. Dawson’s popular arrangement of the African-American Spiritual “Soon ah will be done” and John Rutter’s “God be in my head.”

Advocacy Action Activity

Advocacy Action will be in the Gallery between services this Sunday, March 10, with a letter to the Oregon Board of Forestry. The letter is regarding a new Habitat Conservation Plan that is designed to support both the communities and the public forests of Oregon.

Guest Preacher & Forum on Sunday, March 10

We are pleased to welcome the Rev. Sara Fischer on Sunday morning, March 10, as guest preacher at the 9:00 and 11:00 am services and as forum leader. A priest for more than 20 years, Sara+ most recently served as Rector of Saints Peter and Paul Episcopal Church until that church held its final services in December 2023. Sara+ is a chaplain to people living on the streets and is currently working through the Montavilla Project, a nonprofit, and St. Mary the Prophet, a new church plant for unhoused people..

The choir will sing a communion anthem by the Canadian composer Stephanie Martin (b. 1962), while the organ voluntaries are by Rebecca Groom te Velde (b. 1956) and Adela Douglas-Pennant (1858-1955).

Looking for the ‘Yes’

You may know that I play the piano a little bit. I’ve never considered myself a serious musician, as I play almost entirely by ear, and I’m more interested in making music improvisationally than by playing anything already written down or recorded somewhere else. In my own style of music-making, I’ve found a unique relationship with the word “yes,” because of the creative energy involved with listening closely, feeling deeply, and playing courageously (even when not knowing exactly where it all will go).
