Music This Sunday + Spring Songs

All three of our choirs will be featured this Sunday morning. The Choristers (and other young people participating in the Three Trees production) will sing a song at both 9 am and 11 am at the end of their radio play during sermon-time. It has been inspiring to have such a robust crew of youngsters making music together. At 9 am the St. Michael’s Singers will lead the service and offer William L. Dawson’s classic arrangement of the Spiritual “Ain’-a that good news!” At 11 am, the Saints & Singers’ offertory anthem will be an adaptation of a movement from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World.” His yearning melody was transformed into the popular American song “Goin’ Home” by one of Dvořák’s own students, William Arms Fisher.

Ensemble Boulanger (with Hannah Brewer, piano, and Emma Cowell, soprano) is back at St. Michael’s with a new program of “Spring Songs” on Friday, May 15 at 7 pm. The recital will be a celebration of hope and springtime with music by 19th and 20th century women composers, including Amy Beach, Florence Price, Rebecca Clarke, and Margaret Bonds. Freewill offering with a suggested donation of $20 at the door. Light refreshments will be provided. The program will be performed again on Saturday, May 16 at 2 pm at Moreland Presbyterian Church in Sellwood.
