Sunday’s special musical treat at 9am and 11am services is a favorite solo from Handel’s Messiah sung by our departing bass section leader Dan Gibbs. Dan is actually transitioning from singing baritone repertoire to heldentenor (often associated with Wagnerian repertoire), and will soon be auditioning for opera houses around the world as he settles into his new voice type (or Fach). We are excited to hear him explore the famous tenor recitative and aria “Comfort Ye” and “Ev’ry Valley Shall Be Exalted,” often associated with the season of Advent. Additional Baroque organ selections by German composer Georg Böhm (1661-1733) will be heard at the prelude and postlude.
During the month of August at St. Michael’s we want to feature your favorite hymns at the 10am service! Please email Music Director & Organist Hannah Brewer your favorite hymn(s), including the name, hymn number (if from the 1982 Hymnal), and/or hymn tune, if known. Take a moment to peruse the hymnal this summer and send Hannah an email (hannahb@stmaa.org) by the end of July. We’ll program as many favorites as we can in August!
