Music This Sunday
This Sunday at the 9 am and 11 am services we observe the Fourth of July holiday with several instrumental and vocal selections based on American hymn tunes. Flutist Brian Fairbanks and violinist Chad Southwell will join organist Hannah Brewer with Charles Callahan’s “Rhapsody on American Folk Hymns.” Movements from the same composer’s “An American Sonata” will also be featured. At 11 am a summer pickup choir will sing an arrangement of “The Lone, Wild Bird” from Southern Harmony (a 19th century American shape note hymnal). If you are interested in joining this informal choir this Sunday, please meet in the chancel area at 10:30 am for a brief rehearsal before the service. No choral experience necessary!
Pulling Out All the Stops
The following Sunday, July 12, we are pulling out all the stops with an organ demo after the 9am service. Any interested adults or children are invited to meet Hannah Brewer by the pipe organ console to learn more about our instrument and give it a whirl. Ever wonder what all those buttons, tabs, bells, and whistles are? Or what the view is like from the organ bench? Come find out!
This August is Favorite Hymns Month!
Have a favorite hymn you’ve been dying to sing? We’re compiling a list of your favorite hymns to sing during the month of August at the 10am service. Please email Hannah at hannahb@stmaa.org by the end of July with the title, hymn number and tune name (if known) of your favorite hymns. We’ll program as many as we can in August!
