Announcing our New Associate Rector

I am very excited to share with you that The Rev. J. Antonio Álvarez (Padre Toni) has accepted my invitation to join us at St. Michael’s as Associate Rector for Latino Ministry and Formation. Padre Toni currently serves as Priest-in-charge of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Turlock, California. A child of Mexican immigrants and a native of the San Joaquin Valley of California, he is a bilingual and bicultural person and priest.

Music for Sunday, May 18

The St. Michael’s Choristers finish up their season this Sunday at 9:00 am, singing an anthem all on their own during communion. Their anthem, “Ching-a-Ring Chaw,” arranged by celebrated American composer Aaron Copland (1900-1990), is one that requires some context.

Pentecost Liturgy & Potluck in the Park

This year, on Sunday, June 8, we’re going to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost at the park! It will be at the same location as last year—Wilshire Park, Picnic Area C (look for the shelter and decorated tables), in NE Portland—at 11:00 am, rain or shine (or heat!).

Youth Plans

There are a couple of exciting events coming up for the youth group. First, next Sunday, May 18, will be the end-of-year celebration for the middle- and high-school youth from all services. Meet at 5:00 pm to share Eucharist together followed by pizza and games.

Music for Sunday, May 11

Good Shepherd Sunday brings us one of J.S. Bach’s most iconic works: “Sheep May Safely Graze.” Originally composed as a soprano aria, the choir will sing an arrangement in four-part harmony with the text “Flocks in pastures green abiding.”
