All are invited to this special lecture event presented by the Reckoning with Racism Cohort of St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal to hear Joan speak on how people of faith can engage in public witness and activism around racial and social justice.  

Joan Browning is a Freedom Rider and civil rights activist known for her participation in non-violent protests in the southern United States in the 1960s. She writes and lectures about growing up four miles from one of the South’s most rabid racist politicians and about finding her way into the 1960’s civil rights movement in the Deep South. Her autobiographical writings include an article published in the Fall 1996 Journal of Women’s History, “Invisible Revolutionaries: White Women in Civil Rights Movement Historiography” and “Shiloh Witness,” published in Curry, Browning, et. al., Deep in Our Hearts: Nine White Women in the Freedom Movement (University of Georgia Press, 2000).

The event will feature a 90-minute lecture and Q&A with Joan, followed by a time of refreshments. The event is free, but we are asking if you plan to attend to RSVP to help us with preparations.
