Musical Highlights for Holy Week

The musical highlights for Holy Week continue! Maundy Thursday will feature THREE beautiful choral anthems, including Maurice Duruflé’s much-loved Ubi caritas and Colin Mawby’s majestic Ave verum corpus. Good Friday’s bilingual evening service will feature a heart-wrenching arrangement of the African-American Spiritual Take my mother home during the veneration of the cross.

At the Easter Vigil, the choir will sing a beautiful piece in Church Slavonic (the liturgical language used by the Easter Orthodox Church), as well as Healey Willan’s simply lovely Rise up, my love, my fair one with text from the Song of Solomon. The Vigil will close with Widor’s famous Toccata for organ. You’ll also get to hear Handel’s classic Hallelujah Chorus (from his Messiah) with organ and brass on Easter Sunday. We look forward to welcoming the Portland Brass Quintet again this year, who have been our featured musicians every Easter for well over a decade.
