At St. Michael’s on Sunday, June 22, we’re commemorating Juneteenth with inclusive hymns such as All are welcome and Let streams of living justice flow down upon the earth. Thanks again to Bob Spiers for substituting as organist while Hannah is away.
For those interested in Hannah’s travel journal, today in Eastern Europe she is serving as organist for a Mass at St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, Hungary. Cantores in Ecclesia is performing movements from Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály’s Missa Brevis for mixed chorus and organ, composed in the 1940s. According to Grove Music, Kodály (1882-1967) “helped save people from persecution until he and his wife had to seek refuge in the cellar of a Budapest convent, where he completed the Missa Brevis. He saw out the Battle of Budapest [during the final months of World War II] in the shelter of the opera house; the Missa Brevis received its first performance in a cloakroom there.”
