You may notice some Advent-flavored music in this season before Advent. Some of the readings, particularly for this Sunday, lean into the themes of watching and waiting (the gospel story is “the bridesmaids and their lamps”). At 9am, the sopranos and altos of the choir will sing an “Introit for Advent” that directly relates to this gospel text (“awake! awake! the bridegroom comes”). They will also sing a unison chant by the 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen that suggests a physical manifestation of Wisdom. Meanwhile, at 11am the tenors and basses will have their own moment in the spotlight singing an arrangement, in four-part harmony, of the classic hymn “Jerusalem, my happy home.”

Our next big music event is Choral Evensong for the Feast of St. Cecilia on Sunday, November 22 at 5pm. We commemorate the feast day of the patron saint of music and musicians with works by Hildegard of Bingen, William Byrd, Sarah MacDonald, and Cecilia McDowall. Join us for this beautiful service featuring the St. Michael’s Singers–and several women composers–in all their glory!
