St. Michael’s new Parish Administrator Matte Edey, who is also the Director of Music at Grant Park Church, will play the prelude on Sunday at the 9am service. They’ll play “Eyes on the Prize,” which was a popular anthem during the Civil Rights Movement. Activist Alice Wine originally adapted it from the hymn “Keep Your Hand on the Gospel Plow.” Versions have been recorded by artists like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mahalia Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Mavis Staples, and many others. This iteration was arranged and recorded by singer/songwriter and activist Sara Groves in 2011 for her album Invisible Empires.

Coming up soon on Friday, October 31 at 7 pm, all are invited to Petrifying Pipes & Poetry: A Halloween Organ Spooktacular! St. Michael’s Organist Hannah Brewer will present popular and spooky works by J.S. Bach, Olivier Messiaen, Léon Boëllmann, and others, interspersed with dramatic poetry readings. Soprano Emma Cowell from Ensemble Boulanger will also make a cameo, singing haunting works by Purcell and Haydn. Costumes encouraged! Candy provided. The event is geared towards adults, but children are of course welcome. FREE with donations accepted for St. Michael’s music program.
