Music News

Sunday, March 8 is International Women’s Day and Woman Composer Sunday, as recognized by the American Guild of Organists, the Royal College of Organists, and other professional organizations, which encourage churches to feature music by women. St. Michael’s music ministry is going all in on Sunday! Not only do the morning’s services feature choral anthems and organ voluntaries exclusively by women composers (including Jeanne Demessieux and Theophania Cecil), we have a special Choral Evensong at 5pm dedicated to music by women. We will have a poem written and read by our own parishioner Annie Lighthart, as well as choral music by Canadian Sarah MacDonald (the first woman to be appointed Fellow and Director of Music at an Oxbridge college), the great African-American composer Florence Price (1887-1953), and American Sarah Rimkus, whose Evening Canticles (written in 2018) take inspiration from her time studying and singing in Scotland. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this marvelous service as we celebrate the contributions of women past, present, and undiscovered.
