Music this Sunday
Advent is here! It is a time of familiar carols, warm candlelight, and waiting (sometimes impatiently, sometimes anxiously) for the coming of Christ. At 9am on the first Sunday of Advent, the St. Michael’s Singers will turn to Scandinavia with the Finnish folk song “Lost in the Night,” arranged by F. Melius Christiansen (a Norwegian). The soaring soprano solo contrasts gloriously with the repetitive muttering of “He is coming soon, He is coming soon” from the other choral parts. At 11am, the Saints & Singers offer the traditional Punjabi carol “In silent stillness.” Other music for the first Sunday in Advent includes Bach’s classic “Wachet auf” (Sleepers, wake!).

This year’s Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols will be held on Sunday, December 21 at 5pm. Every year, St. Michael’s music program presents this beloved candlelit service comprised of scripture readings, poems, hymns, and carols telling the story of the birth of Jesus. Choral music being prepared by the St. Michael’s Singers includes seasonal works by Antonio Vivaldi, Morten Lauridsen, Rosephanye Powell, David Willcocks, local composers Robert Lockwood and Jaebon Hwang, and much more. Please join us for a festive reception in the Parish Hall after the service.

Choral Evensong
The Feast of St. Cecilia
Sunday, November 23 at 5pm

Please join us this Sunday at 5pm for our Choral Evensong for the Feast of St. Cecilia. St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music and musicians, making her feast day (transferred from November 22) a fitting date to commemorate. Choral music will include works by Orlando Gibbons (for the 400th anniversary of his death), Joanna Forbes L’Estrange, and Herbert Howells (A Hymn for St. Cecilia). A reception will follow in the Parish Hall, graciously sponsored by members of the 7:30am service.
