Music for Sunday, Sept. 15

We continue this Sunday in our Season of Creation. The St. Michael’s Singers will lead settings of Psalm 19: The heavens declare the glory of God. In today’s Gospel, St. Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ. In the version recounted in Matthew, Jesus responds, “You are Peter” – thus the offertory anthem, Tu es Petrus (You are Peter), by the great Renaissance composer G. P. da Palestrina. At communion, the choir sings the Prayer of St. Richard of Chichester, by L. J. White – the original source for Day by day.

James Walker, our interim organist, will play music from France and Belgium. Marcel Dupré’s career spanned much of the 20th century, and he is considered one of the great improvisers of his time. Jacques Lemmens was one of the most influential teachers of the 19th century. The school he founded for teaching church music is still active today and bears his name: the Lemmensinstituut. The curriculum has expanded over the past century, and today the institute also houses one of Europe’s largest schools for music therapy.
