We’ve programmed a truly classic anthem this Sunday: Herbert Howells’ Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks. Written in 1941 and sung in Anglican churches and cathedrals throughout the world during Lent (the text is based on Psalm 43:1-3), it describes the psalmist’s spiritual thirst for God, comparing it to a deer searching for water. Howells often jokingly referred to himself as the reincarnation of a Tudor-era church composer, and this contribution solidified his reputation as a key player in 20th-century church music.
Meanwhile, to continue highlighting Women’s History Month, the organ prelude on Sunday is by the French composer Jeanne Demessiuex (1921-1968), who was the first female organist to sign a recording contract. Attende Domine is based on a Lenten Gregorian chant (Hear, O Lord).
