Edward Elgar (1857-1934) will be a featured composer this Sunday. One of Elgar’s most famous works is his Enigma Variations, an orchestral composition consisting of fourteen variations on an original theme. “Nimrod,” the ninth and most famous variation from this set, will be played as the prelude at the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services, arranged for organ by Robert Gower. It should be recognizable to most of you.
The choral anthem at 9:00 am is also by Elgar and it, too, is transcribed from its original orchestral accompaniment to one for keyboard (and choir). The Spirit of the Lord is upon me is the prologue to the oratorio The Apostles, first performed in 1903. It is a lush, Romantic work, and quite a contrast in style to Sunday’s 11:00 am anthem, which is an arrangement of the Negro Spiritual I know de Lord’s laid His hands on me. The St. Michael’s music program is fond of variety and keeping you all on your toes!
