For the past 16 years, St. Michael’s Spanish-speaking community has hosted the Celebration of the Virgen de Guadalupe, commemorating the date in 1531 when the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an indigenous Mexican who had recently converted to Christianity. To the present day, she remains a powerful symbol of Mexican identity and faith.
Although historically a Mexican tradition, many Latin countries have embraced the Virgin de Guadalupe as a powerful protector. This nighttime celebration is marked by traditional foods, music and worship, and culminates with the singing of Las Mañanitas. This year, we will host guest preacher Jesús Reyes from the Diocese of Olympia who brings to us a rich clerical history including missionary experience in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico.
All are invited, welcome and encouraged to come on Wednesday, December 11. The festive meal, or convivio, begins at 8:00 pm in the Parish Hall, and the service in the church begins at 9:30.
