A week from Sunday is our first Choral Evensong of 2024! Please join us at 5:00 pm on February 4 as we celebrate the Feast of Candlemas, commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple forty days after Christmas. In addition, a non-liturgical music event coming up at St. Michael’s is “Jane Austen’s Parlour” on Saturday, February 17, at 4:00 pm.

Music for Sunday, Jan. 14

Some of this Sunday’s music was chosen in recognition of MLK Day on January 15. The choir’s offertory anthem is an arrangement of the African American spiritual “Hush! Somebody’s callin’ my name,” which employs a simple, rhythmic pattern to highlight the last two letters of each “hush.”

Upcoming Music Events

Happy New Year from the St. Michael’s music program! One exciting upcoming musical event is a recital with Brian Fairbank’s Seattle-based Cathedral Trio on Saturday, January 20, at 5:00 pm. This is the ensemble’s farewell/retirement concert, so all are invited to come and hear their greatest hits, which include chamber music for the unusual combination of flute, harp, and viola.

Music for Advent III & Christmas

The choir is split for Advent III on Sunday, December 17. At 9:00 am, the tenors and basses will be featured, singing a beloved arrangement of the 13th century plainsong tune “Of the Father’s love begotten.” At 11:00 am, the sopranos and altos will sing a lively Magnificat by David Hogan.

Music News

All are invited to St. Michael’s at 7:00 pm on Sunday, December 3, for Advent Lessons & Carols. This service is based on the “O” Antiphons (the seven verses of “O come, O come, Emmanuel”). We’ll explore Advent themes through scripture and poetry readings, choral anthems, and congregational hymns.

Advent Lessons & Carols

Lessons & Carols is fast approaching! This annual, beloved event will be held early in the season on Sunday, December 3, at 7:00 pm this year. As sung two years ago, we will again structure the service around the seven “O” Antiphons, rather than the typical nine lessons. Dating back to the 6th century, these “O” Antiphons expand on the most famous paraphrase, the hymn “O come, O come, Emmanuel,” focusing on the Hebrew scriptures associated with the coming of Christ.
