Music for Sunday & Looking Ahead

The St. Michael’s Singers will finish out the liturgical church year today with classic anthems by Ralph Vaughan Williams (“Let all the world in every corner sing” from “Five Mystical Songs”) and W.A. Mozart (“Ave verum corpus”). Hymns and keyboard voluntaries will reflect the themes of Thanksgiving and the Reign of Christ.

Advent Book Group

You are invited to join Scott+ for a four-week Advent book group, reading Dr. Scott Bader-Saye’s “Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear: Choosing Trust over Safety in an Anxious Age.” These 90-minute gatherings will cover two to three chapters per week (approx. 50 pages) with guided conversation about the themes each week.

Red Doors Artisan Fair

Calling all artisans, crafters, bakers and makers! St. Michael’s is excited to again host our Mini-Maker-Mart, also known as the Red Doors Artisan Fair. The fair will be on Sunday, December 8, with crafts created by people in our community and shopping open from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Music at the Bishop’s Visitation

The St. Michael’s Singers are preparing two special anthems for the bishop’s visit on Sunday, November 17. At 9:00 am, the sopranos and altos will lead the service under the guidance of Assistant Choir Director Kaeli Porter, offering an anthem that combines two camp meeting songs: “Rise, Oh Fathers” and “No Time.”

During the past few weeks, I’ve been spending extra time with our Baptismal Covenant—in Youth and Adult Confirmation Groups, preparing families for the celebration of two baptisms (1:00 service on All Saints), and finalizing liturgies for Bishop Akiyama’s visitation to St. Michael’s (Sunday!).

Convention Reflection

On Saturday, October 25, Salem’s Conference Center was filled to the brim with Episcopalians as the Diocese of Western Oregon held their 2024 Annual Meeting of the Convention of the Episcopal Church in Western Oregon. The room was filled with people from every church in the Diocese, talking and sharing the latest news, at this first in-person meeting after four years of conventions on Zoom.
