Delayed for two weeks due to weather challenges, members of the Advocacy Action Committee will be in the Gallery this Sunday, January 28, at 10:15 am with letters to the heads of Citibank and Bank of America. The letters are in protest of both banks continuing financial support of fossil fuel expansion.
Since the Paris Climate Agreement was signed in 2016, Citibank has poured nearly $333 billion dollars into the fossil fuel industry. Citi is now the world’s second-largest funder of fossil fuels in the world, the largest funder of coal in the U.S. and one of the largest funders of oil and gas in the Amazon forest.
As for Bank of America, while they have a public policy restricting the support of Arctic oil drilling, that hasn’t stopped them from financing the companies behind these projects. They provided ConocoPhillips, the company responsible for Alaska’s Willow Project, over $100 million in 2022 alone. They are also financing 25+ new methane gas terminals along the Gulf Coast, and in one year provided $959 million dollars to the top 30 methane-expanding companies.
Stop by our table to sign letters asking these banks to stop supporting the expansion of fossil fuels and the continued devastation of God’s creation.
