March 1 is the first Sunday of the month, which means you’ll hear the St. Michael’s Singers at the 9am service and the Saints & Singers Choir at 11am. The 9am offertory anthem is a gorgeous version of “God so loved the world” by Bob Chilcott, a popular British composer and conductor, with text directly from the gospel reading of the day.
At 11am you’ll hear an arrangement of “Amazing Grace” by former parishioner Melissa Parkhurst, set to the melody of the traditional American folk song “The House of the Rising Sun” (popularized by the English rock band The Animals).
Lenten Choral Evensong
Women Composer Sunday
Sunday, March 8 at 5pm
More beautiful music is coming up on Sunday, March 8 for our Lenten Choral Evensong at 5pm. March 8 is Woman Composer Sunday (as recognized by the American Guild of Organists, Society of Women Organists, and other organizations) and International Women’s Day, so all of the choral and organ music will be by women. Featured composers will include the great African-American musician Florence Price (1887-1953), Canadian Sarah MacDonald (the first woman to be appointed Fellow and Director of Music at an Oxbridge college), and the prolific French late-Romantic composer Mel (Mélanie) Bonis (1858-1937).
