In recent months, a Newcomers Committee has been formed to help think through the ways we welcome folks to St. Michael’s and walk together into greater connection and involvement in the parish community. I am grateful to the convener and members of this group as well as the Junior Warden for the People and the Senior Warden of the Vestry.
They have been learning about a program called Invite-Welcome-Connect, and reading the book (of the same name) by my friend Mary Palmer, to learn about the ways we can help those who visit St. Michael’s to feel welcome but also move toward participation in the life of this community.
So far, this committee has undertaken the following projects:
• Planning a Newcomer Gathering on the morning of February 17;
• Auditing the signage around the St. Michael’s campus;
• Advocating for moving the Welcome Table (and Manny) to a more central location, just inside the courtyard doors;
• Updating welcome cards for the pews;
• And much more!
I am really grateful that these friends are catching sight of possibilities for a ministry focused on growth and connection. If you are interested in learning more about their work, and maybe even getting involved(!), please talk with someone on the committee.
With you,
The Rev. R. Scott Painter, Rector
