The Trader Joe’s Food Distribution ministry was created around 2000 with the mission of delivering food which is unable to be sold but still edible to organizations in the Portland area who serve those unable to regularly feed themselves. Ministry members in association with St. Michael’s pick up donations (TJ’s calls them “spoils” but writes them off as donations) from the Hollywood Trader Joe’s Tuesday through Saturday at 6:30 am as well as Tuesday through Sunday at 11:00 am, and donations are taken to a number of clients.
This ministry fills a void between those outreach organizations in need of donated food and the food donor who has food to donate but no mechanism to get it to those who need it. Hollywood Trader Joe’s is a major and dependable contributor to the NE Emergency Food Program, providing approximately 25% of their annual total donations. In 2017, Trader Joe’s provided and this ministry picked up and delivered 379,922 items with a value of $859,159.80 to NE Emergency Food Program!
