Brother John, member of the Ecumenical Community of Taizé in France, will preach at the 9:00 am liturgy and will speak at the 10:10 Forum at St. Michael’s on Sunday, May 13. He and Brother Emile are in the U.S. in May for several speaking engagements and will join in a number of Taizé Prayer services on the east and west coasts.
Brother John, born in Philadelphia, has been a member of the Taizé Community since 1974. Gifted in writing and speaking about the New Testament, he frequently leads the Bible conversations in Taizé for the thousands of young adults who visit there annually. He is the author of several books, most recently Life on the Edge and Friends in Christ. St. Michael’s has hosted a Taizé Prayer service for more than ten years, and Brother John’s visit will be a blessing indeed.
The May 14 Taizé Prayer Service at St. Michael’s has been cancelled, but we invite you to join in the Portland-wide (and beyond) Taizé Prayers on May 13 at 5:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, NW 19th Avenue. A good ecumenical turnout is expected. Brother John and Brother Emile from the Taizé Community in France are visiting Portland for a few days and will share in those Prayers on the 13th. During their weekend visit, they are also meeting with some small groups concerned with immigrants and refugees, with young adults and campus leaders, and with the local L’Arche community.
The Taizé Prayers will resume at St. Michael’s on Monday, June 11, at 7:00 pm in the church. We hope to see you there!
